What the HPV vaccine does
- HPV (human papillomavirus) is a very common infection passed on through sexual contact. Some types cause cervical cancer, which is the second most common cancer in Nigerian women.
- The vaccine protects against the HPV types that cause about 9 in 10 cervical cancers, as well as genital warts.
- It works best when given before someone becomes sexually active, which is why it is offered to young girls.
Who should get it, and when
- Girls aged 9-14: two doses, the second 6 months after the first. In Nigeria this age group gets HPV free through routine immunisation at government health facilities.
- Girls and women 15 and above: three doses over 6 months (0, 2 and 6 months).
- Boys and men can also be vaccinated privately - it protects against genital warts and throat, penile and anal cancers.
- Already had HPV or an abnormal smear? Vaccination can still protect you against the other types - ask the pharmacist.
Not recommended during pregnancy. If you become pregnant between doses, finish the course after delivery.
Side effects and safety
- A sore arm, mild fever or headache for a day or two is normal.
- Fainting straight after the injection happens in teenagers, so you sit for 15 minutes afterwards.
- Over 15 years of worldwide use with no link to infertility - a common false rumour.
Screening still matters
- The vaccine does not cover every HPV type, so cervical screening is still needed from age 25 (or 5 years after first sex).
- A visual inspection (VIA) or Pap smear every 3 years, or an HPV DNA test every 5 years, is what most Nigerian clinics offer.
